This anthology edited by three Portugese information scientists focuses on electronic dance music culture and the phenomenon of trance. It has a special interest in how collective trance phenomena in this culture work on the Internet. Contributors come from several countries (Portugal, US, UK, Greece, Germany, Brazil), and a variety of perspectives, including sociology, anthropology, communication, digital information technology, psychology, and religious studies. They are a mix of academics, performer/creators in the scene, and mediamakers documenting it. A number of papers take up the concept of raves and psytrance music as a form of shamanism; several relate it to Goa or other religious movements. Others explore EMDC parties on the Web, or digital aspects of music performance. A number of small color photographs are included, but this is not a highly visual text.

Emília Simão is a university professor and researcher, PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms, Master in Multimedia, Master in Arts and Degree in Communication. The main research themes are immersive environments, digital culture, media and digital arts, art and technology, human-computer interaction, electronic dance music cultures, retrofuturism and neotribalism vs post-modern aesthetics. Professor in several areas such as new media aesthetics, semiotics, emerging arts practices, virtual languages, human-computer interaction and multimedia, at Escola Superior Gallaecia University (ESG); Polytechnic Institute Cavado e Ave (IPCA) and Catholic Portuguese University (UCP), Portugal. Coordinates ObEmMa - Scientific Observatory of Electronic Music and Media Art - UP (Porto University) and member of CiESG-Arts and Multimedia Research Center (ESG) / CITCEM-Digital Culture Research Department (UP). Published the book Exploring Psychedelic Trance and Electronic Dance Music in Modern Culture.

Armando Malheiro da Silva Armando Barreiros Malheiro da Silva is Associated Professor of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and member of the coordinating committee of the Information Science degree taught by the Arts and Engineering Faculties of the University of Porto. Born in Braga, he has a PdD in Contemporary History in the University of Minho, graduated in Philosophy by Philosophy Faculty of the Catholic University of Braga and in History by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto. He obtained the diploma of the course of Librarian-Archivist of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. Is member of the Center for Studies in Technology, Arts and Communication Sciences (CETAC.Media) and shares his researches in areas such as the archivist and information science; the metanalysis; political and ideological History in Portugal in the XIX-XX century; Family history and local studies.

Sérgio Tenreiro de Magalhães, PhD, teaches Information Security related topics in the Portuguese Catholic University. He is also a researcher in that university, mainly in the fields of Information Security, cyber enhanced terrorism monitoring, prevention and social impact. He has published several works in international refereed journals and in international conference proceedings and he is currently a member of several international conference committees and editorial boards.
