Description & Coverage
Description:

Combining a variety of sounds to form words that can be understood by other individuals, language is one of the defining characteristics of the human species. However, since even highly educated people, great writers, and poets are not consistent regarding the meanings of words, we are unlikely to find consistent rules regarding word meanings by examining human language use. Therefore, deep semantics aims to study of the meanings of individual sounds and their role in creating the meanings of words.

Deep Semantics and the Evolution of New Scientific Theories and Discoveries provides innovative insights into the mental processing of word meanings and lack of consistency in human use, while providing examples from different language sources such as, the Quran and Arabic text. This publication presents word roots, the human cognitive system, sound function, and knowledge process, and is designed for linguists, educators, speech professionals, researchers, students, and academics whose interests include topics on the study of people’s imperfect views, feelings, and habits in using words.

Editor/Author Biographies

Tom Adi is Director of Research at the Readware Institute. He received a PhD. in computer science from Johannes Gutenberg University in 1979. He discovered the theory of deep semantics in 1985. A software implementation of the theory (Readware) was the top performer at the renowned international NIST Text Retrieval Conference (TREC-8, 1999). The theory was discussed in a video lecture (2017) and nine peer-reviewed publications, including chapters in two handbooks of research on Semiotics and Synthetic Emotions, an encyclopedia article (2014), a theory of consumer choices (2014), and an award-winning article about conceptual structures (2015).

Hala Abdelghany received her PhD in linguistics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York where she was trained in psycholinguistic lab experimentation by some of the most distinguished researchers in the field. Her research has been discovering patterns in human sentence processing with special focus on ambiguity in Arabic sentence production and perception with a fine-grained interest in the semantic-prosody interface. She works as an Associate Arabic Linguist analysing data for machine learning and NLP. She also teaches Arabic Language at CUNY and has developed practical course material for the smart language learning classroom.

Kathy Adi joined the research team at the Readware Institute in 2017 to work on this book. She attended high school for NASA families in Houston, Texas. Since the book is intended for the general audience, her contribution was crucial in producing a manuscript in plain scientific language. With professional college background, Kathy worked as executive secretary at Tarrant County College, Fort Worth, Texas for the Small Business Administration, and as executive secretary of quality control in projects involving the Humvee vehicle for the Armed Forces.
