  • Big Data Management
  • Cloud in Industry, Science, Public Administrations and Governments
  • Economics and Business Facet of Cloud Computing
  • E-Science
  • Forensics
  • Green Computing
  • Healthcare
  • Management Science
  • Standardization and Security in the Cloud
Reviews & Statements

With the growing ubiquity of cloud computing, new technologies arise almost daily. Designed to increase connectivity and to work on huge distributed data sets, these technologies are gaining wider consideration and acceptance. This timely and comprehensive sourcebook details the state-of-the-art technologies and looks at possible future developments in the fields. Subjects covered include basic enabling technologies for cloud computing, service delivery models, standardization and security, the all-important big data handling and computing, general economics of cloud computing and applications of cloud in enterprise and manufacturing, applications in science (also intersecting with the big data methods), operations research and healthcare and developing technologies combining cloud and high-performance computing, with a look at "green computing" with its several solutions in liquid cooling, renewable energy sources, et al.

Editor/Author Biographies
Lucio Grandinetti is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Computer Engineering, Electronics, and Systems of University of Calabria (UNICAL), Italy. At the same University, he holds the position of Vice Rector. He graduated from the University of Pisa, Italy and the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a post-doc fellow at University of Southern California, Los Angeles and Research Fellow at the University of Dundee, Scotland. He was a member of the IEEE Committee on Parallel Processing, and European Editor of the MIT Press book series on Advanced Computational Methods and Engineering. Currently he is a member of the Editorial Board of four international journals. He is author of many research papers in well-established international journals and Editor or co-Editor of several books on algorithms, software, applications of Parallel Computing, HPC, Grids, and Clouds. He has been the recipient and scientific leader of many European Commission-funded projects since 1993 (e.g., Molecular Dynamics Simulations by MPP Systems, EUROMED, HPC Finance, WADI, and BEINGRID). Currently, he is Director of the Centre of Excellence on HPC established at the University of Calabria by the Italian government and Co-managing director of a Supercomputing Centre jointly established by the University of Calabria and NEC Corporation.
Ornella Pisacane obtained her Laurea degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Calabria (UNICAL) with the maximum score of 110/110 with honors and defending a thesis on Parallel Algorithms of Simulated Annealing for Simulation-Optimization. At the same university, she completed her Ph.D. in Operations Research, defending a thesis on Agent Scheduling in a Multiskill Call Center. During her Ph.D. course, she also conducted research activities at the Département d’Informatique et de Recherche Opérationnelle, Université De Montréal (Canada). She was a research fellow at the Department of Electronics, Informatics, and Systems of UNICAL and teaching assistant in some courses of Optimization and Logistics at the same university. Currently, she is research fellow at the Information Engineering Department of the Università Politecnica delle Marche, where she also teaches a course on mathematical models for production management. Her scientific research area mainly concerns the definition of optimization models and solution approaches for addressing problems that arise in Grid/Cloud environments, in Logistics, and in Transportation (such as (Electric) Vehicle Routing). She is co-author of international journal papers, conference proceedings, and book chapters.
Mehdi Sheikhalishahi has 12 years of experience in Web technology, network security, and distributed computing technologies. Mehdi is currently a research fellow in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at University of Calabria in Italy after completing his PhD studies and PhD thesis on energy efficient computing at the same department. In this position, he is doing research on cloud, green computing, and application of cloud computing in futuristic “Internet of Things.” In addition, he is currently collaborating with the Energy Efficient HPC Working Group (EE HPC WG), which is an international group with participants mostly from the United States, to drive implementation of energy conservation measures and energy efficient design in high performance computing (HPC). Also, Mehdi is a collaborator in an HPC cloud experiment, i.e., The Uber-Cloud Experiment. This experiment aims at exploring remote computing services for the future. While cloud computing in general is moving fast, there are still some hurdles to overcome when it comes to more sophisticated services such as HPC and engineering simulations in the cloud. During his PhD studies, he has conducted research on challenges of energy efficiency in cloud computing infrastructures, in particular focusing on resource management and scheduling components of a cloud system. He spent his abroad research at Distributed Systems Architecture Research Group, Complutense University of Madrid in Madrid, Spain. He was a research visitor at the cloud group of the same department from September, 2010 until February, 2011. Under supervision of Prof. Ignacio M. Llorente, he carried out research on challenges of energy optimization in cloud computing infrastructures. In particular, he developed efficient energy aware consolidation policies. Prior to that, he gained experience and conducted research on HPC and grid computing during his Master studies. Previously, he worked in the network security field, developing security systems such as firewalls and Public Key Infrastructure products. In addition, he was involved in Web development of e-Commerce systems such as online store during the first stage of his career. Mehdi is a co-author of several scientific papers on grid, cloud computing, and energy efficiency, and he was reviewer of several conferences and journals such as Journal of Optimization Methods and Software, andA Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) on Many Task Computing. He taught several computer science courses (programming and HPC programming) in Iran. Mehdi is a founding member and technical advisor to a spin-off company on emerging computing technologies in Italy. All in all, Mehdi has high-profile global roles in network, computing, and information security architecture, engineering, operations, product management, and marketing with a passion for cloud computing. 307
