IGI Global's Fair Use Policy

For Subscription-Based (Standard Access) Publications

Although all authors and editors of IGI Global sign an Author's Warranty and Transfer of Copyright Agreement, IGI Global supports a Fair Use Policy allowing authors and editors to:

IGI GLOBAL AUTHORS, UNDER FAIR USE CAN:

  • Post the final typeset PDF (which includes the title page, table of contents and other front materials, and the copyright statement) of their chapter or article (NOT THE ENTIRE BOOK OR JOURNAL ISSUE), on the author or editor's secure personal website and/or their university repository site.
  • Green Open Access: IGI Global fully complies with the open access requirements of UKRI, Wellcome, and NIHR. Where required by their funder, authors retain the right to distribute their author accepted manuscript (AAM), such as via an institutional and/or subject repository (e.g. Europe PMC), under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license for release no later than the date of first online publication.

IGI GLOBAL AUTHORS, AS PER THE AUTHOR’S WARRANTY AND TRANSFER OF COPYRIGHT CANNOT:

  • Cannot post the article, chapter, full book publication, or journal issue on general open access sites for free download and distribution, such as ResearchGate, arXiv, Academia.edu, SSRN, or society-sponsored sites.
  • Cannot use in a coursepack without first securing the consent of IGI Global.
  • Cannot copy or distribute for any monetary consideration.
  • Cannot be given to a commercial third party to post, copy, distribute, sell or give for free or for any monetary consideration.

For those authors and editors wishing to republish their chapter or article in a future book or journal publication they are authoring or editing, they will need to seek written permission from IGI Global.

IGI Global abides by international copyright law, and as such all contributors are asked to sign an IGI Global Author's Warranty and Transfer of Copyright agreement prior to publication. The warranty portion ensures that materials submitted to IGI Global for consideration are original and have not been published elsewhere previously. The copyright portion clearly states: Author(s) cannot post the contents of the article/chapter on any website (with the exception of the author's secure personal website and/or their university repository site) or distribute the work to others in either electronic or print forms without the written permission of IGI Global. This includes any article or chapter currently under consideration by IGI Global and the final published work.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we understand that certain exceptions may need to be made in order to make IGI Global published content more easily accessible for teaching and learning purposes. Please contact our Intellectual Property and Contracts Department if there are any special requirements you must fulfill with your published content.

To inquire about permissions and rights of IGI Global publications, please contact Ms. Jan Travers using the contact information found at the bottom of this page.

For Open Access Publications

Authors and editors of IGI Global open access publications sign an Author Warranty. The warranty portion ensures that materials submitted to IGI Global for consideration are original and have not been published elsewhere previously. Moreover, it ensures that any necessary permissions for the use of copyrighted materials (figures, photographs, etc.) are secured by the author(s) before publication. Open Access publications carry the CC BY 4.0 licensing arrangement. Under this licensing, authors and editors are allowed the freedoms below, so long as they give credit to the original author(s).

Once the work has been formally accepted and planned for publication under open access by IGI Global or when it is formally published under open access by IGI Global, then authors will be welcome and encouraged to post the work wherever they wish (pre-publication or post-publication posting).

FOR POST-ACCEPTED AND POST-PUBLICATION ARTICLES/CHAPTERS, AUTHORS CAN:

  • Post the full final typeset PDF of their chapter or article on the author or editor's personal website and/or their university repository site.
  • Post the article or chapter on general open access sites for free download and distribution, such as ResearchGate, arXiv, Academia.edu, SSRN, or society-sponsored sites.
  • Use in a coursepack without having to secure the consent of IGI Global.
  • Be given to a commercial third party to post, copy, distribute, sell or give for free or for any monetary consideration.
  • Republish their chapter or article in a future book or journal publication.

When sharing the article or chapter, please be sure to link back to the published version on IGI Global’s website. Please note that the final published version of the chapter or article should overwrite any pre-publication posting.

Retrospective Open Access Publishing

Authors can unlock their previously published work to Open Access (OA) and have the ability to share their work freely. Authors who previously published their work under the traditional publishing model (standard access) would have signed an Author’s Warranty and Transfer of Copyright Agreement that transferred the copyright of their work to the publisher. When a journal article, book chapter, or full book publication is converted to open access, the copyright returns to the authors of the manuscript under the CC BY 4.0 license, allowing the copyright of the work to remain solely with the authors and opens greater sharing capabilities for authors who wish to maximize the visibility of their published work. Any author interested in increasing the sharing power for their work through retrospective OA can contact openaccessadmin@igi-global.com for more information.

Digital Preservation

IGI Global is committed to ensuring that our published content remains accessible and usable to our customers, regardless of any technological or other disruption. As such, IGI Global partners with CLOCKSS & LOCKSS for content archiving.
